A Kitsune Udon : Seika classes: Illustration, making a picturebook

The final assignment given to us for the end of the semester was to make a 14 page picture book with a dust jacket around it. The theme for the picturebook was Little Red Riding Hood, the theme we worked on last assignment. But seeing we had the freedom to do anything with the story made me decide to turn it into a new story with the only relation being the color red.
I wrote a new story based on Japanese traditional culture and folklore.

I wanted to create a new folktale. The story became about a miko, a japanese shrine maiden who wear red hakama pants and other red features on them besides their pure white jacket. So Red riding hood became a miko and the wolf became a fox, an animal you see around shrines as protective stone statues everywhere. I wanted the new folkstory to be about how the stone foxes came to be there at the shrine.
The story is about the miko carrying a ritual key across the shrine ground, but a fox is lurking at the key from the bushes. He catches the miko by surprise and manages to catch the key. He runs but she takes out her ritual vermillion coloured azusayumi, a holy bow and arrow to shoot the fox and with the holy arrow turn him into stone.
I decided not to use any text in the book as it is a folklore, so people can make up there own version/story to the images. Also if we used text it had to be exact quotes from the original Grimm tale.

They gave us 2 weeks to work out the storyboard for it.

But we only had 2,5 weeks for the actual artwork and printing and binding.
I drew every single element of each page first with ink on paper and then scanned and put the pages together digitally.
For the cover and dust jacket I made two ichou stamps and after making a print of them, scanned them and arranged them on the covers digitally.

The arranging of everything digitally went very fast because of the storyboard and knowing exactly how I wanted things to look.
I used different types of japanese washi paper for the textures and background. These I bought at specialised papershops and also scanned them.

Today I bound the book! In a very strange way which we were told to do it that way, with double sided tape which took a looooong time and was tedious but the pages were nice and thick and it has a better feel to it while flipping through.
